Research Interests

Adrienne Csizmady, PhD habil., is a Research Professor at the ELTE Centre for Social Sciences, Institute for Sociology, Budapest. She served as Director of the Institute between 2015 and 2023. She was previously Professor of Sociology at Eötvös Loránd University (2008–2019) and the University of Szeged (2019–2022).

She graduated in sociology in 1995, received her PhD in 2001, and completed her habilitation at ELTE in 2008. She has more than 30 years of experience in empirical urban research, examining topics such as gentrification, suburbanisation and tourism.

Her main research interests include urban social problems, the social consequences of urban renewal, over-tourism, sustainable urban environments, suburbanisation, the integration strategies of people relocating from cities to rural areas, and social acceptance of innovations. She has led or contributed to numerous international comparative research projects—including RE-DWELL, RURALIZATION, OIKOnet and EDUlife—and has served as National Coordinator or Principal Investigator in several major initiatives.

She has acted as an Expert and Monitor for Horizon 2020 (2018–2019) and as an Expert and Reviewer for EU FP7 project proposals (2012, 2014, 2016). Her publication record includes nearly 200 journal articles, conference papers, books, book chapters and textbooks in Hungarian and English. Her work has appeared in journals such as the International Journal of Housing Policy, Journal of Policy Research in Tourism, Leisure and Events, Tourism Geographies, Social Inclusion, Sustainability, Critical Housing Analysis, Urban Planning and others.
